- **Event Description**: Why is Janeu (Yagnopavit) Worn?
Mantra:
Om Yagnopavitam Paramam Pavitram, Prajapateryat Sahajam Purastat |
Ayushyamagryam Pratimuncha Shubhram, Yagnopavitam Balamastu Tejah ||
The Janeu is also known as Upavit, Yagnasutra, Vratabandha, Balabandha, Monibandha, and Brahmasutra. The tradition of wearing Janeu is ancient and is prescribed in the Vedas. This ceremony is called the Upanayan Sanskar.
'Upanayan' means 'to take close to.' Close to whom? To take one closer to Brahman (God) and Knowledge. It is one of the 24 primary Sanskaras (rites of passage) in Hinduism. The ceremony includes tonsure (shaving the head) and bathing in holy water.
Once worn, a person must follow all its rules strictly. It cannot be removed; if it becomes dirty or breaks, it must be replaced immediately with a new one.
Who can wear the Janeu?
In Hinduism, it is the duty of every individual to wear the Janeu and follow its rules. It is not limited to Brahmins; any section of society can wear it. After wearing it, a person is called 'Dvija' (twice-born).
Celibates and Married Individuals: A girl who intends to remain a celibate for life can also wear it.
Threads: A Brahmachari (celibate) wears a Janeu with three threads, while a married person wears six threads (three for self and three for the spouse).
What is the Janeu?
It is a sacred thread made of cotton, worn over the left shoulder and under the right arm.
Three Threads: These represent the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh), the three debts (to Gods, Ancestors, and Sages), the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas), and the three stages of the Gayatri Mantra.
Nine Strands: Each of the three threads consists of three strands, totaling nine. These represent the nine gates of the body (mouth, nostrils, eyes, ears, and the excretory organs), reminding the wearer to keep these senses pure.
Five Knots: These represent Brahma, Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. They also symbolize the five senses and five elements.
Length: It is 96 fingers long, signifying that the wearer should strive to learn the 64 arts and 32 sciences.
The Scientific and Health Significance
Beyond religion, the Janeu offers several health benefits:
Heart Health: Passing near the heart, it helps regulate blood circulation and reduces the risk of heart disease.
Digestion and Excretion: While urinating or defecating, the Janeu is wrapped around the right ear. Scientific studies suggest that certain nerves behind the ear are connected to the intestines and bladder. Pressure on these nerves aids in smooth bowel movements and prevents constipation and acidity.
Prostate and Sperm Protection: Pressure on the right ear nerve during urination is believed to protect sperm health and prevent urinary tract issues.
Mental Clarity: Wrapping the thread around the ear activates the Surya Nadi (Sun Channel) in the body. It also helps prevent bad dreams and improves memory (similar to why teachers used to pull students' ears to sharpen their focus).
Blood Pressure: It is known to help in controlling blood pressure and reducing anger by regulating the natural electric flow in the body along the spine.
General Rules
Right Ear: Must be placed on the right ear during urination or defecation to maintain purity and stimulate specific nerves.
Replacement: Must be changed if a thread breaks, after 6 months of use, or after a birth/death in the family (Sutak).
Cleanliness: It should be cleaned while still on the body during a bath. It should never be removed from the body entirely unless being replaced.
Universal Presence
The essence of this ceremony exists in various forms across different cultures and religions. For instance, a similar practice is observed in some rituals before the circumambulation of the Kaaba in Mecca, showing that the core concept of spiritual discipline is universal.
