By now, many of you know that I’m in the process of trying to get full custody of a young man named Michael. Michael is 17 years old, and during our first court hearing, I learned something that broke my heart — he was placed in juvenile detention, not because he did anything wrong, but because there were no foster homes available and Youth Services were completely full. He was handcuffed and treated like a prisoner simply because there was nowhere else for him to go.

When I first joined the national program Covenant House to help end youth homelessness, I thought that was where I could make the biggest impact. But then I realized—they don’t have any services close to home. That made me think on a more personal level: what if we started by helping the kids right here in our own community?

So, on November 21st, I will be sleeping outside in a tent, right here in our area, to raise awareness and funds for homeless youth in our community. You’re welcome to come out and show your support in person, or you can donate through the link below. The Sleep out will be in New Carlisle. 

Michael once stayed at the Youth Service Bureau (YSB) in Mishawaka, and he truly loved it. The people there treated him with kindness, dignity, and hope. That’s why every dollar raised will go directly to YSB Mishawaka, to help other kids like Michael who need a safe place to land.

All proceeds will be donated to YSB 

YSB has many safe places teens can go to get safe! 
Safe Place is a network of businesses, fire stations, libraries, and public places where youth can get immediate help. Thousands of students across St. Joseph County receive presentations about YSB and Safe Place each year.

They partner with the South Bend Fire Department, South Bend, Mishawaka and Walkerton Police Departments, St. Joseph County Public Library system, area Burger King restaurants and the emergency rooms at Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Young people can also get on any Transpo bus to get immediate assistance.

Available for teen youth between the ages of 12-17.
I'm hoping that we can add a Safe Place right here in New Carlisle where I live.

There are 35,000 homeless teenagers in Indiana and in the 6 cities we call on there are thousands.

I’m doing this for Michael—and for every young person in our area who’s ever experienced homelessness. Together, we can show them that they are seen, loved, and never forgotten. �

I personally have met at least a dozen kids like this boy on the streets. Most homeless youth couch surf or just stay in abusive homes. 

I will be asking people to donate funds or pitch a tent in support. This is a shout out to all of my volunteers & community come join me for one night to give back. All proceeds will be donated to Youth Services YSB
