- **Event Description**: The next Harbor Country Hikers adventure will take place at natural areas special to hike leader and HCH President Pat Fisher. The hike will be at Turtle Creek Preserve and the NBAS Nature Study Trails. Pat has been the conservation steward and advocate at both areas for over a decade. Now, due to a potential housing development, the role of conservation advisor will be added to his repertoire. His task will be to help design a "Wildlife Coexistence" plan which includes a baseline site assessment, impact mitigation, and long-term habitat management. Join us on our next hike to explore these unique natural areas and learn about the importance of these terms.

The NBAS Nature Study Trails (NST) in combination with the adjacent Turtle Creek Preserve (TCP), a Chikaming Open Lands (COL) preserve, have over 4 miles of trails and nearly 70 acres of forested and wetland habitats. Depending on the trails you visit, you will discover a large assortment of native flora and fauna living in harmony with ancient beaches, wide ravines, streams, a planted prairie, hardwood forests, hardwood swamps, floodplains, marshes and seasonally wet flatwoods filled with shrub wetlands, pit and mound topology, windblow, vernal pools and rivulets. Students, staff, and volunteers maintain the trails, and scout members and neighborhood volunteers have added the trail structures. The trails feature painted rocks, a StoryWalk, a Little Free Library, playgrounds, and are perfect for beginner snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. These trails interconnect the school's "NBAS Nature Study Trails," Chikaming Open Lands’ “Turtle Creek Preserve,” and the City of New Buffalo’s “Turtle Pond Nature Preserve.” We will be hiking the easy trails first.

Wear long pants (preferably tucked-in), a sun hat, sturdy shoes or boots, preferred pest controls, and bring plenty of water. Light precipitation and hot or cold weather don’t ordinarily lead us to call off hikes, but health-threatening temperature extremes and lightning can be causes for cancellation. In case of inclement weather on the day of the hike, check our website, harborcountryhikers.org, or our Facebook page for notice of cancellation or rescheduling.

Directions: From US-12 in New Buffalo head south on South Eagle Street, at the second stop sign turn right onto West Detroit Street which turns into Lubke Road at the curve. After the curve, watch for the school on the right. We will gather in the parking lot.

HCH has an All-Terrain Rollator which may be reserved for use on our hikes. Reservations are made on a first-come first-served basis by filling out the brief form at .
