Join us for a special afternoon of film, music, community and culminating celebration of the Museum’s exhibition Morabeza: Cape Verdean Community in the South Coast, on view through February 24.

The program, taking place in the Cook Memorial Theater, features artist Cândida Rose Baptista and a screening of the 45-minute documentary Cândida, directed by Rosalyn Negrón (UMass Boston). The film offers an intimate portrait of Cândida’s life, artistry, and cultural legacy, exploring the deep connections between Cape Verdean heritage, music, and community across generations.

The afternoon will include a live musical performance by Cândida, audience Q&A and conversation with the artist and filmmaker.

About the film:

Cândida is the story of a second-generation Cape Verdean American singer, songwriter, author, and educator who returns to Cabo Verde to explore traditional Cabo Verdean music and its influence beyond the archipelago nation. Traveling throughout the islands of Cabo Verde, Cândida visits musicians and immerses in the nation’s history and culture. Set in the backdrop of Cabo Verde’s stunning landscape, her journey takes her to the island of Brava, home of her ancestors. Both a homecoming and a musical education, Cândida weaves in Cabo Verdean music, featuring Cândida’s own powerful and honeyed voice, to explore themes of identity, longing, belonging, and the joy and melancholy that marks Cabo Verdean music as one of the most evocative musical genres in the world. The film was an official selection of the New Bedford Film Festival and nominated for Best South Coast Narrative.

This program is free with Museum Admission.
