Using marine plastic gathered locally, we’ll work together to transform recycled wine bottles into striking lamp bases, creating a shared artwork that shines a light on the issues of marine plastic pollution.Shine a Light on Marine Plastic is a collaborative, drop-in workshop forming part of Gather, a wider project exploring marine plastic pollution and our relationship with the coastline.Following a beach clean, the plastic collected will become the raw material for this workshop. Participants are invited to work together throughout the day to decorate recycled wine bottles with fragments of marine plastic, transforming everyday waste into sculptural lamp bases.All materials and equipment will be provided – just bring your creativity!The idea draws on a familiar tradition: in the 1960s and 70s, shell-covered lamp bases were popular souvenirs of seaside holidays — made from shells gathered on the shore. This workshop offers a modern re-interpretation of that idea, reflecting the reality of today’s beaches, where plastic has increasingly replaced shells as a common find.You can drop in at any point during the day, contribute as much or as little time as you like, and be part of a shared, collective artwork. No prior experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to look more closely at what we find on our shores.Once completed, the bottle bases will be turned into lamps and will go on local tour as part of the Gather project exhibition, acting as both artworks and conversation starters — quiet but powerful reminders of the scale of marine plastic pollution.Why not make a day of it?Join us earlier in the day for one of our Weird Waste Words workshops, where we’ll be making up imaginative stories inspired by marine litter.
