UN Day celebrates the United Nations and its mission for peace, human rights, humanitarian aid and sustainable development – especially responding to the today’s unprecedented crises for refugees and climate. As the Trump Administration questions critical global responsibilities - the UN’s work is more important than ever.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently stated, “The United States represents an important set of values, human rights, values related to freedom, to democracy…the cooperation between the U.S. and U.N. is absolutely essential for those values to be preserved in our world.”
In the spirit of that message, come help us hold up this torch of commitment to a more peaceful and just planet by joining us for UN Day!
This year’s keynote speaker, Nick Birnback, is Chief of Public Affairs for the United Nations Department for Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO). With 18 years of experience at the UN, most spent in the field, and with the perspective of a fellow Broolynite, he will talk about critical work in peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, economic development, public health and combating climate change. He will also highlight the UN’s contributions to U.S. national security in addition to world peace.
Special Guest, Munira Khalif, the 2017-18 U.S. Youth Observer to the United Nations, will join the speaker program. Learn more about her extraordinary work here: http://genun.unausa.org/youth_observer
