                                                       Sculptural design for everyday adornment

The Maker:

Alicia Goodwin (Chicago, 1980) has been creating jewelry since childhood, but it wasn’t until she was earning her degree at The State University of New York Fashion Institute of Technology that she realized that creating impactful work in metal was her true calling in life. During her 18 years of living in New York City, Alicia worked for many talented small designers and also larger jewelry brands, all the adding work to her own unique line of jewelry. She launched Lingua Nigra soon after graduating F.I.T., creating work inspired in nature with a focus on ancient talismans, victorian era work and mourning sentimental jewelry.

The Process:

The work is created using several techniques, most notably acid etching and also metal reticulation. Each approach yields random texture that can never be predicted during process of time and detail. The final result is metal with random textures based on time and process.Shapes are then cut out of the work, or cast items created from wax receive texture. The work is meant to be treasured for a lifetime and becomes even more transformative when electroplated with 22kt gold.

The Work:

Made of brass, silver and gold, extra care is given to these works. With nods to everything from markings on beetles to the texture on trees, Lingua Nigra is meant to evoke a timeless feeling that can be worn everyday. The artistry should be shared by wearing.
