The Great Lectures

The Great Lectures and The Great Courses are teaming up for the first time ever to bring you one of the most provocative and insightful events yet, exploring the State of American Democracy.
In celebration of International Democracy Day on September 15th, we’ve invited 4 renowned political historians and analysts to shed light on democratic America’s revolutionary past, controversial present and hopeful future.
Held for the first time at the stunning Time Square Event Space, you may select which lectures you’d like to attend, or participate in the all-day event which includes all three engaging talks + Meet the Speakers + an informal lunch at the venue. Our advice? Don’t miss the final lecture, which will be followed by a “meet and greet” cocktail hour (valued at $40/pp., but complimentary for our guests!)
Come learn and celebrate with us.

--------------
Session One: The American Revolution, The First Chapter of America’s Democracy
Hop in the historical time machine back to America’s roots, where it all began. Learn about the fight for Independence and how our democracy was born on September 15th.
Session Two: Law & Religion: The Founding Father's Intention & Where We Are Today
How is religion tied in with our democratic past and present? The Constitution was meant to separate church and state, but has that successfully happened over the years? Join us as we discuss how the two might not be so separate after all.
Session Three: Can Democracy Disintegrate? The German Experience
Hitler seized the democratic Weimar Republic and turned it into one of the most brutal dictatorships the world has ever seen. We studied it so it would never happen again. But is it happening as we speak? Find out on September 15th.
(or, another option: Hitler’s rise to power. The downfall of the democratic Weimar Republic. One of the most brutal dictatorships the world has ever seen. Are we repeating history? Find out on September 15th.)
Session Four: The Future of Democracy in America + Cocktail Hour
America’s democracy is changing as we know it. Join us as we discuss how immigrant voices are shaping our democracy and women are impacting democratic change. What is the fate of American politics?
