During the iconic period of Jewish immigration and settlement on the Lower East Side, dozens of synagogues dotted this crowded neighborhood, extending as far north as East 14th Street, and to the East River. The architectural style of these synagogues varied from modest to extravagant, and Moorish to classical. As the Jewish population diminished, some of these religious buildings closed, became private residences, or were converted into churches.
Come along with our guide, Urban Historian Barry Feldman, on a walking tour that visits extant sites of these former synagogues. Tour narrative will discuss architectural styles, the synagogues' country of origin, and their colorful personalities.
This tour lasts almost 3 hours and has significant walking.
Included in the price of this tour is the use of wireless microphones to enable you to better hear the guide.
Tickets are an additional $3 PP if they are purchased the day of the tour, pending availability.
