NYDIS and The Salvation Army Greater New York Division offer free one-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training certification for clergy, staff & volunteers from congregations & faith-based organizations - all training materials and breakfast are included. Participants may bring a brown bag lunch or eat out nearby during lunch hour.
We have recently partnered with Harlem United to provide Opioid Overdose Reversal Naloxone Training during the MHFA training. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of a potential opioid overdose and how to keep a victim of overdose safe until help arrives. Upon completing the training, participants will receive a certification card and free Narcan kit.
The MHFA training is being offered in partnership with Emblem Health and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Together, we support NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray's #ThriveNYC's goal - to train 250,000 New Yorkers in Mental Health First Aid.
Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds an understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course, which uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect persons to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches about the risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addictions.
