We will depart from the Historical Society Welcome Center (73 W. Pulteney St. Corning, NY) between 5:45-6:00 am. Our first stop is the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston. We’ll tour the museum and have a walking tour of the historic waterfront area, then have a box lunch at a park on the museum grounds. The museum was moved to its present property, an old boat shop on the Hudson River, in 1983. Its exhibits include small river craft, artifacts of steamships, ice-harvesting tools and maps, and paintings and sketches from past eras. The 1898 steam tugboat Mathilda is docked in the yard next to the museum.
Our next stop will be the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. This historic site is one of the region’s oldest Hudson River estates. For nearly two centuries this place has been home to socially prominent New Yorkers. It is a superb example of the domestic ideal of the elite class in the late 1800s in America. The National Park Service preserves over 200 acres of the original property, including historic buildings and their furnishings, manicured landscapes, formal gardens, natural woodlands, and associated historic documents. The centerpiece of the state is the 54 room mansion, a masterpiece of the American Beaux-Arts design.
Our last stop is a buffet dinner at the River Station Restaurant overlooking the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. We return to Corning around 11:30pm
