Atlas Obscura Society New York: Secrets of the Script with Sotheby's
Inspired by an upcoming auction of rare manuscripts, we'll take a selection of hand-penned notes from recent centuries into the former floor of F. W. Woolworth's office for a private viewing. In this one-night-only event, we'll seek to discover more about the hands that composed personal notes, including Martin Luther King Jr., John Keats and Abraham Lincoln.
Your night begins with a reception inside a landmarked apartment space in the historic building, where we'll toast to the incredible stories, preserved architecture, and sweeping views available to you.
We'll be joined by Anne Trubek, author of The History and Uncertain Future of Handwriting, who will start the session by discussing how we think about handwriting in contemporary times and the culture surrounding handwriting. With that in mind, Selby Kiffer, senior vice president in the Books and Manuscripts department in Sotheby's New York, will guide you in a viewing of rare and meaningful handwritten artifacts. Finally, we'll put pen to hand with a writing workshop of our own, designed to inspire and analyze our own scripts.
This event is produced in partnership with Sotheby's Fine Books & Manuscripts Department. To view their current catalog of items up for auction, including items described above, head to the Sotheby's online auction, open until June 28th, 2018.
