Sheher-e-Ashob: Poetry of a lost city
SHEHER-E-ASHOB- Delhi in 19th century was undergoing major transformations. The Mughal rule had given way to regional principalities, the East India Company had taken root in the Indian landscape - there was a socio-political vacuum that seeped into all spheres of life. It found expression in the literary production of the time, particularly in Urdu Poetry. The Sheher Ashob form, or the Lament of the City became a dominant style in poetry, with many poets expressing their anxieties with the present and nostalgia for the past. The walk will cover the historical district of Shahjahanabad, and the beautiful poetry of Ghalib, Mir, Zauq and others to discover the decline of Delhi through their poetry.
