Khamira: An Indo-Welsh folk fusion
We flag off the cultural calendar for the New Year on a musical note with a stellar performance by Indo-Welsh folk music outfit- Khamira.
Khamira is what happens when India and Wales combine to create a fusion of Welsh folk, Indian classical and jazz genres.
A mutual respect and shared vision of what is possible when cultures meet is at the heart of Khamira. The apparently disparate elements of Indian classical and Welsh folk are joined together by the unifying aesthetic of jazz and improvisation which creates an unique, vivid and dynamic music. The 4-member band performs on a 4-city tour of India after sold out performances at the Hay Festival in 2017.
Four jazz musicians from Wales join three of India's young new wave of adventurous genre-breaking musicians to create Khamira (meaning 'yeast' in Hindi).
Suhail Yusuf Khan's virtuosic sarangi dovetails with Tomos Williams' trumpet's Vishal Nagar's tabla joins in a feast of rhythms and syncopations with Mark O'Connor's drum kit; Aditya Balani's soaring guitar solos are supported by Dave Jones' keyboard and Aidan Thorne's bass.
