SPACE would like to invite you to join us in the observation of a rare and viewing worthy phenomenon, a Total Lunar Eclipse, on 31st January 2018 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at India Gate, New Delhi. Exact location will be marked on our SPACE India Facebook page on the previous day.
A total eclipse of the Moon will occur on Wednesday 31 January, 2018 from about 6:00pm to 9:30pm. The Moon will be plunged into darkness for 1 hour and 16 minutes (in Full Eclipse phase), in a deep total eclipse. A total lunar eclipse appears dark red, and is called the ‘Blood Moon’. A total lunar eclipse happens when the whole moon enters Earth’s shadow and can happen only when the sun, earth and the Moon are in a straight line and the moon is full. This time, it's not only a total lunar eclipse happening!!! The juxtaposition of supermoon, blue moon and total lunar eclipse events is occurring which is a rare combination seen after many tears!
Additionally, during earlier times people were not aware about the reasons behind the occurrence of eclipses, therefore, they had a lot of fear in their minds. There are many myths associated with eclipses and people used to avoid intake of any kind of eatables during the eclipses. In the era of Astronomy and Space Science we want to break this myth by encouraging people to have some snacks with us at India Gate and prove this ancient myth wrong. Educators will also spread scientific temperament by highlighting the science governing eclipses.
SPACE is a niche educational institution which works for the popularization of Astronomy and Space Sciences in young minds to develop scientific temperament and rational thinking in the society. SPACE is pioneer in this domain with rich legacy of chasing eclipses from many years. We are the only educational institute, which had observed Eclipse from land, sea and air at same time.
We welcome you to participate in the following ways:
Join the Observation :
SPACE will conduct the activity at India Gate as mentioned. Telescopes will be set up for viewing, and educators will be providing a guided tour of the eclipsed Moon as well as planets and other celestial objects visible. All participants are welcome along with family and friends to view the rare spectacle of the Blood Moon. Please aim to come at a time when you can view Total eclipse.
Observation starts: 6:15 pm (rising moon will be in partial eclipse phase)
Total Eclipse phase: 6:21pm to 7:37 pm IST
Observation ends: 9 pm IST
Photograph the Moon: Participants are encouraged to photograph the eclipsed Moon and send it in for social media postings. Please post with hashtags @SPACEIndia and #TLE2018
