- **Event Description**: Marcus Rezak is one of those musicians who is never content to stand still, either stylistically or geographically. Originally from Chicago, now based in LA, the visionary guitarist has traveled a winding path to arrive at the here and now. He has an extensive catalog of original music, while also focusing on various cover projects including Shred is Dead and Gumbo: A Phish Experience (seen multiple times here at the Crazy Horse).

The music of Phish has been particularly influential for him since seeing his first show in ’99. He’s even gone so far to purchase a G2 Paul Languedoc and assemble a rig to achieve a similar sound to Trey Anastasio. Reflecting his attunement to this type of music, Rezak has previously played and recorded with members of the Trey Anastasio Band. The relentless innovator is also a chameleon who fits in with a wide spectrum of soundscapes and has collaborated recently with artists ranging from Blues Traveler to superstar DJ, LP Giobbi.

Any true Phish fan knows that one of Trey’s primary influences is Frank Zappa. He famously claimed that Zappa played the best guitar solo he ever witnessed live. Playing this music isn’t just a casual lark for Rezak. He has performed and worked with original members of the Zappa band, including Ike Willis, Arthur Barrow, Bobby Martin, Ray White, Chad Whackerman, and Moore. Arthur Barrow even appears on his album, Gateway to the Galaxy. The intricate essence of Zappa’s music flows through his veins! 

The music of these two bands works extremely well together while also presenting a thoughtful contrast. In this fresh project referred to as PHRANK, audience members will be on the edge of their figurative seats as the band conjures a death-defying alchemy of these two very complex songbooks. For good measure, Rezak plans to sprinkle in a few originals so we can experience the full range of his imagination.

As can always be expected with Rezak, he is bringing a band of killers, including three of the finest musicians from the Bay and Sacramento area, who Crazy Horse fans will recognize from Band Beyond Description, Crosseyed & Painless, New Monsoon, The Craven Quartet and China Dolls. For starters, we’re referring to Anna Elva on drums. Anna is one of the most sought-after drummers in the Bay Area who plays with projects mostly centered within the Grateful Dead universe. Her fluid elasticity makes her look like a human octopus as she dances behind the kit with an ultra-groovy surrender.

Keyboardist Jordan Feinstein is a longtime collaborator of Stu Allen and a who’s who of Bay Area jam purveyors. Funk is his middle name and he is known to make the energy bubble over the brim at the drop of his signature top hat. His melodic presence and inclination for instigation makes him a solid ringer for the Chairman of the Boards. 

Many contend that Mike Gordon is an alien and the same has been said about Murph Murphy. You won’t find a much more cerebral bassist as he is clearly computing transmissions from the ethers and translating them into velvety sounds for our listening and dancing pleasure. Coming from the school of early to mid-90s Phish, his technical wizardry will lend to a razor-sharp group synergy. It will be scintillating to see Murph and the rest of the gang also weave the Zappa tunes into the mix. Anything could happen!
