​Neosho Revives Historic Strawberry Festival: A Celebration of Heritage and Community
​NEOSHO, MO — June 28, 2026 — The Newton County Historical Society is proud to announce the return of the historic Neosho Strawberry Festival, reestablishing a beloved community tradition that first flourished from 1904 to 1955. This year’s inaugural revival will take place on June 5 2027, inviting residents and visitors alike to honor Neosho’s rich agricultural legacy.
​From 1897 through the 1930s, Neosho earned national recognition as a premier producer of strawberries. During the peak harvest each May, the town transformed into a hub of excitement as train cars were loaded with the surplus crop to be shipped across the country. Following weeks of intense labor, the community would traditionally gather at Big Spring Park—and later, the Neosho Square—to celebrate the harvest with a festival and carnival.
​“We are thrilled to bring this piece of our history back to life,” said the event organizers. “Our goal is to create a free, accessible event that celebrates our identity as a major berry producer while fostering a vibrant atmosphere for local businesses and families.”
​Event Highlights
The festival will commence at the conclusion of the local Farmers’ Market featuring a full day of nostalgic, family-friendly programming:
• ​Live Entertainment: Enjoy toe-tapping Ragtime music performed at the historic Grecian stage.
• ​Old-Fashioned Fun: Kids can participate in classic games, including sack races, hopscotch, checkers tournaments, and cornhole, with candy prizes for winners.
• ​The Strawberry Dessert Contest: Local restaurants and civic clubs will face off in a sweet competition. To ensure local support, contestants must use produce sourced from the Neosho FFA or the Farmers’ Market. Attendees can serve as official judges by purchasing a ticket; each participant will receive a lanyard and a ballot to vote for their favorite entry.
• ​Community Traditions: The event will feature maypole decorations and the crowning of a "Strawberry King and Queen."
• ​Local Flavors: The festival will showcase local vendors selling strawberry-themed delicacies, including homemade jams, jellies, and fresh-baked breads. Community partners will be on-site offering festival favorites like funnel cakes and hotdogs.
