We begin at Sbubule, the green hill marking the end of the Geotrail, before descending to Msauli, the abandoned mining village tucked away in the valley below. From there, we ascend the Diepgezet massif and spend the night at Umfula Tented Camp on the banks of the Nkomazi River.

For the next two days, we rough it as we traverse a remote section of the Songimvelo Nature Reserve, pushing on to Maid of the Mist—the highest point in the Makhonhjas—before taking on the Devil’s Knuckles and Jambila, its unmistakable Thumb.

Those who have time on their hands or aspire to complete another leg can join in the Greenstone Belt, the third leg of the Great Escarpment Quest, which kicks off on the 2nd of May.
