If you’re interested in learning more about healthy lifestyles and plant-based nutrition then this is the event for you… it might even save your life.

On the evening of 4 March, the Nelson premiere of kiwi documentary ‘The Big Fat Lie’ will take place, followed by a discussion and Q&A session. We are delighted that a fantastic local panel will be joining us to lead the discussion and answer questions, including:

‘The Big Fat Lie’ explores how powerful plant-based nutrition can be for our health. It tells the story of Grant, who is rushed to hospital with a heart attack at age 58 and how he then discovered that eating the right food could turn his life around. Over the course of his journey Grant interviews 6 professors, 9 doctors, health charities, the Ministry of Health and numerous health business specialists. He also shares case studies of others with heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and gastrointestinal diseases.

Panelist Biographies:

Professor John D Potter

John D Potter is Professor at Massey University Centre for Public Health Research in Wellington. He is also Senior Advisor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology, University of Washington, both in Seattle, USA. His career is focused on nutrition, other environmental and host factors, and genetics in the aetiology, pathobiology, and early detection of cancers and other chronic diseases.

International recognition includes the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Award for Research Excellence in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention (2009) and the 2012 Medal of Honour of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France. He is author/co-author of more than 700 scientific papers, chapters, and books; his Scopus h-Index is 114. He was named by Clarivate Analytics as one of the top 1% of cited authors worldwide in 2018.

Dr Wayne Hurlow

Wayne fell in love with the Nelson region in 1997 while on school camp after moving from South Africa in 1996. He vowed that I would return, and that day came in November 2010.

A lot had happened during that time including marrying his gorgeous wife Kim in 2005, and completing my medical degree at Auckland University in 2008. Their family has since grown and they have two wonderful children and enjoy all that this region has to offer.

Wayne loves general practice (currently working at Wakefield Health Center) and is passionate about lifestyle medicine. Hippocrates, the father of medicine once said, "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food". So much of disease stems directly from the choices we make on a daily basis i.e. the food we eat and the activity we engage in, AND THEREFORE the cure of disease starts with daily choices around what we eat and activity we do. This is hugely empowering!

When not at work, you may find me on a mountain bike or in running shoes exploring and enjoying the trails around Nelson.

Dr Graham Evans

Graham has a great personal interest in the provision of health by diet and lifestyle interventions as over nine years ago he changed to a whole food, plant based diet with little oil. The dramatic improvement it made in his health has made him keen to spread the message that most chronic diseases can be prevented or even reversed by adopting this eating pattern.

As a doctor since 1980 and a career anaesthetist both in UK and Nelson, he reflects: “had I been taught the health benefits of an optimum lifestyle at medical school there is little doubt I would have pursued a different career path, one which can stop people developing the diseases that I currently spend my working days attempting to treat in the operating theatre.”

Dr Taisia Cech, GP, Stoke

Taisia grew up a stone’s throw away in the Nelson Lakes area. After completing a Bachelor in Human Anatomy at Otago University she went on to study medicine at the Otago University campus and Wellington hospital. Taisia worked at Wellington and Nelson hospitals then completed her GP training here in Nelson and is currently working at Stoke Medical Center.

Taisia believes food has a huge role in health and enjoyed completing a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition through Cornell University. She likes to live by Michael Pollan's quote 'Eat food, not too much, mostly plants'.
