Over the past few months, Jamaica has been going through something incredibly difficult. Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, hit the island at the end of October and caused damage on a level Jamaica has never experienced. Homes, roads, farms, and entire communities were torn apart, and a lot of people are still dealing with the emotional and financial fallout. It was the strongest storm to ever make landfall there, and the impact was felt in every corner of the country. But what’s happening now is a story of resilience. Jamaica has begun the long process of rebuilding. Not just patching things up, but working to come back stronger than before. With the help of the Jamaican government and donations from around the world, Jamaica is in the beginning stages of rebuilding it's infrastructure- homes, water systems, public services, electricity and more. Currently, some areas are reopening, some communities are already cleaning up and rebuilding, and even though the journey ahead is long, the spirit of the people is powerful. What stands out most is how Jamaicans always come together during hard times. Even while dealing with their own losses, people are out helping neighbours, cleaning up, sharing resources, and holding that sense of community that Jamaica is known for. The country is healing — slowly, but with strength — and there’s a real hope that this recovery will create a stronger, safer future for everyone. BREDS started back in 1998 in Treasure Beach, Jamaica. It was founded by a hotelier and a Peace Corps volunteer after some local kids simply asked for a basketball court. From that small request grew a grassroots community-based nonprofit: an organization run “by the community, for the community." The name “Breds” comes from “bredren” — a friendly local greeting, something like “friends” or “brethren” — reflecting exactly how the people in Treasure Beach think of one another. Their mission is to help people in Treasure Beach reach their potential. They do that by acting as a bridge between local residents, the government, and outside partners, bringing support for education, sports, environmental sustainability, and livelihood-boosting efforts. During hurricane aftermaths, BRED's often coordinates relief procedures: distributing water, food and care packages, restoring water supply by getting generators for local water pumps, and delivering construction materials to help rebuild homes.
