A half-day tour around the diverse history-rich area variously known as: Surburban North, Wakapuaka (the canoe of red pine), Happy Valley (due to the whiskey stills) and Hira.
Guided tours at: Hillwood historic house, St John the Evangelist Church and Hira Cemetery, afternoon tea at art deco Wakapuaka Memorial Hall. Talks on Māori history centred on Delaware Bay, the pattern of European settlement, key pioneer families, schools and community services, retelling of some juicy local scandals and brief roadside stops at Glenduan and other significant sites and viewing of the Wakapuaka River restoration project.
Mobility required to get on and off bus.
Bus departs to and from Trafalgar Centre, leaving at 1pm. Please arrive no later than 12.50pm.
A short walk is involved at several stops, but they are all flat and accessible.
Toilets at two locations. Light afternoon tea provided.
Bring your own water, sun and rain protection.
