Adult and student winners in the Wings Over Wetlands Art Competition will have their works showcased at Roy Wood Reserve 11.00 am – 2.00 pm on Sunday September 13.
Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee in partnership with Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre are conducting the event to raise awareness of the importance of wetlands for migratory birds.
Prizes by sponsor Ingenia Lifestyle are $2,000 for the Overall Winner; Open 1st $1,500, 2nd  $1,000; High School Student 1st $800, 2nd $650; and Primary School Student 1st $400, 2nd $300. 
A member of the judging panel from the Japanese city of Kushiro, with which Port Stephens and Newcastle have a sister wetlands relationship, reports that choosing winners has been challenging with all entries of a very high standard.
 “Looking through the entries, they are all wonderful. Some beautifully depict the connection with Japan, while others convey the importance of protecting migratory shorebirds. There are also striking images of birds flying non-stop across the vast ocean. Congratulations to all the artists.” 
Other participating organisations at the event include the National Parks and Wildlife Service, which will have a display and the Hunter Bird Observers Club, which will conduct bird spotting along the shoreline. The Marine Rescue Food Truck will attend, so visitors can enjoy a bacon and egg roll, steak sandwich, hot dog, sausage sandwich or hamburger.
“Every year shorebirds that breed in Japan, Siberia, the Arctic Circle and Alaska fly to the Hunter and Port Stephens wetlands during the northern winter,” said Elaine Fereday, deputy chair of Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee.
“For example, the Bar-tailed Godwit flies non-stop from Alaska – one tagged female flew a world record 12,000 km without stopping for 9 days. The Latham’s Snipe flies non-stop 8,500 km from Kushiro to our wetlands.
“To make these annual return flights, the birds need healthy wetland habitats here and in their breeding grounds to rest, feed and gain strength for their journeys.”
