We hope you’ll join us for our annual GLNC Education Day on March 8 at 10:00am at the Kalamazoo Kennel Club (1249 D Ave W, Kalamazoo, MI 49009). This year we’re highlighting the many activities that make our Newfoundlands so versatile!
Whether you’re just getting started, looking to improve, or simply curious, this is a great opportunity to learn, ask questions, and connect with fellow members. Sessions will run in one hour increments.
Here’s what we have planned:
Water Work – Led by Cindi Kurner and Terry Fuller
Two sessions: 10:30am and 1:30pm
A presentation followed by Q&A, including discussion of the proposed Beginning Water Dog Test for the upcoming season. If you’d like to bring your dog, they’ll also demonstrate and help you get started with “take/hold/give.” (Bring lots of treats!)
Draft Work – Led by Chris Halatek
Chris will provide an introduction to draft work, explain equipment basics, and demonstrate foundational training steps to help you and your dog get started safely and confidently.
Therapy Work – Led by Ann Halatek and Brinda Ganesan
An overview of local therapy dog organizations and what’s required to become certified. We’ll also run mock CGC-style exercises so you can see if your dog may be ready to become a therapy team.
Scent Work – Led by Melanie Reynells
An introduction to scent work, how trials are structured, and a live demonstration of how to begin training your dog to search and indicate odor.
Grooming – Led by Connie Younggreen and Dawn Staffen
Tips and tricks for achieving that perfect Newfie groom, along with practical demonstrations and product recommendations.
Obedience & Rally – Led by Jenny Zablotny
An introduction to obedience and rally, including what to expect in the ring, common exercises, and tips to help you and your dog build strong teamwork and ring confidence.
Conformation – Led by Jenny Zablotny, Connie Youngreen and Dawn Staffen
An overview of ring procedures, stacking and gaiting basics, and guidance on preparing your dog for the show ring.
We hope to see you there! Event open to members and non members.
