OVERVIEW
Santorini is the postcard-perfect caldera island with whitewashed clifftop villages, blue domes, and sweeping volcano views. Expect dramatic scenery, lots of stairs, and unforgettable photos. This event page is an information hub for anyone on our sailing: share tips, ask questions, and post helpful updates for this port.
TIMING
Arrival and all-aboard vary by sailing—check the daily program. Ships anchor off Fira and tender to the old port below town or, for some tours, to Athinios. Because queues can build—especially for the cable car in the afternoon—plan a generous return buffer and aim to be back at the tender pier 90 minutes before all-aboard.
GETTING ASHORE & AROUND
From the old port below Fira, ride the cable car up to town (pay on the spot), or take the long footpath with many steps; animal-welfare concerns mean most visitors avoid donkey rides. From Fira, public buses run to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, and other points; buy tickets onboard and check the signboards for current departures. Taxis are limited. Pre-arranged tours, private drivers, and rental cars/ATVs are common; roads are narrow and parking tight near Oia and Fira, so factor in walking time.
THINGS TO DO
Oia for iconic caldera viewpoints and sunset vibe (crowded near sunset). Fira for shops, cafés, and cliff paths; the cliff-edge walk toward Firostefani and Imerovigli offers constant views. Akrotiri archaeological site for Bronze Age ruins and nearby viewpoints toward the “Red Beach” (access may be restricted; many visitors enjoy the lookout only). Black-sand beaches at Kamari and Perissa for a relaxed swim. Wineries around Pyrgos and Megalochori to sample Assyrtiko with caldera panoramas.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Wear supportive shoes; expect stairs, uneven paths, and heat with limited shade. Carry water, sunscreen, and a hat. Crowds and lines peak midday—starting early helps. Cable car lines near sail-away can be long; build in extra time or return earlier. Follow ship time rather than local time. Be mindful at cliff edges and narrow lanes; step aside for photos to keep pedestrian flow moving.
FOOD & LOCAL FLAVORS
Try fava purée with capers, tomato fritters (tomatokeftedes), white eggplant dishes, grilled octopus, and fresh seafood. Sip chilled Assyrtiko or a Santorini rosé with a view. For dessert, baklava or local spoon sweets hit the spot.
