Bass Drum of Death revient à l’essentiel. Du titre minimaliste de leur sixième album, SIX, à leur approche d’écriture, leurs deux premiers disques ayant été entièrement enregistrés sur GarageBand, le processus créatif du groupe rappelle fortement les débuts de leur carrière.

Bien que ce nouvel album marque un retour à leur méthode d’enregistrement originale, quelques changements notables sont à souligner. Au lieu de travailler seul sur les démos, le chanteur et guitariste John Barrett a réuni le groupe, composé de Jim Barrett à la guitare et Ian Kirkpatrick à la batterie, pour plusieurs sessions dans son home studio à Nashville afin de donner vie aux morceaux.

À la console se trouvait le producteur Jeremy Ferguson (Cage the Elephant, White Reaper), qui a ensuite accueilli le groupe pendant dix jours neigeux dans son studio Battle Tapes pour peaufiner les enregistrements.

Le résultat est une déflagration crasseuse de leur son signature, mêlant des influences allant des Stooges à ZZ Top, sublimée par la finesse du travail d’ingénierie de Ferguson.

Si SIX sonne comme un retour aux sources, le groupe prouve qu’il lui reste encore quelques tours dans son sac et des surprises sous le coude.
