Participants will attend to found objects, gestures, sounds, and the social exchanges, transactions, and small rituals that animate everyday life. Starting with a guided excursion on day one, the group will be led through multiple locations, facilitating encounters with objects and situations that might ordinarily go unnoticed. These initial encounters will form the basis of each artist's research archive. Upon returning to Glór Studio, the course will explore multiple modes of perception and students will begin working through structured exercises involving constraints of time, material, or method – designed to heighten observational and expressive possibilities across all media. Group discussions and one-on-one support will help identify why certain moments resonate, how to apply editorial choices, and how to recognise opportunities within small observations that can be developed into conceptual footholds for your work. On the final afternoon of the course, participants will present the traces of their research to the group in the shape of field notes, talks, experiments, and early conceptual structures. Heinz Riegler (b. 1969, Vienna) is an interdisciplinary artist working across sound, installation, video, and performance, currently living on Gubbi Gubbi land in South East Queensland. His work is known for transforming materials and situations into spatial performances and installations. Alongside installation work, Riegler composes ambient music released through Room40, with recent performances including a series of live cinema scores for Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s Homo Sapiens across Australian capital cities, presented by the Goethe Institute. His practice encompasses both independent projects and collaborative works with artists across sound, architecture, and visual art. Riegler’s work has been presented by institutions including the Museum of Old and New Art’s (MONA) Dark Mofo festival, the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA). Recent exhibitions such as Supply Chain, Ghosts and Caress have been staged across Australia and Europe, extending a sustained investigation into material transformation, archival excavation, and the layered narratives embedded in found objects. Riegler is currently working on music for a feature film, developing a new full-length album for the Room40 imprint, and working on a long-term archival project examining family histories, complicity, and the inheritance of violence. In August 2026, he will lead Minor Signals // Big Trouble at the Salzburg Summeracademy of Fine Arts.
