Jungaji is a Western Gugu Yalanji and Birrigubba songman whose creative journey spans over three decades, from his early days as a member of the groundbreaking 90s R&B vocal group Aim 4 More in Inala, to a powerful solo career driven by cultural revival and deep spiritual connection. His name, Jungaji—meaning rock, strength, and knowledge (pronounced Jun-gah-jee)—reflects both his identity and purpose as a storyteller, truth-teller, and cultural torchbearer.
Through his music, visual art, theatre, and advocacy, Jungaji delivers contemporary cultural narratives that inspire resilience, pride, and empowerment. His work is a heartfelt exploration of self, community, and spirit, grounded in the ancient traditions and stories of his people. Rich with nuance and ancestral memory, Jungaji’s songs act as vessels of knowledge, evoking the wisdom of his Elders while speaking directly to today’s generations.
At the core of his artistry is a commitment to justice, healing, and cultural continuity. By weaving his language and lore into his lyrics, Jungaji helps preserve the stories and sounds of his heritage, fostering intergenerational connection and collective hope. His deeply personal yet widely resonant songwriting shines a light on the lived experiences of First Nations Australians, celebrating the strength of identity and the power of cultural pride.
The ‘Betting On Blak’ album is a collection of profoundly meaningful tracks, including two songs in Gugu Yalanji language: 'Gummy Bamarra', which received a Queensland Music Award, and 'Kalkurr', where Jungaji collaborates in the studio with his youngest son, Dean Brady.
Jungaji’s music is more than sound—it’s a ceremony of family, story, and survival. Each performance is a celebration of Blak excellence, ancestral lineage, and the unbreakable bonds that continue to shape his journey. His artistry invites all people to listen, learn, and stand in solidarity, as he carves out a future grounded in truth, sovereignty, and song.
