Dance: Body in a Box
The multi-media piece Body In A Box was premiered in September 2015 at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi and since then has evolved significantly. The dance artist Jared Onyango developed the piece in a discrete choreographic process referencing post-colonial discourses. It is anchored on principles of a body of texts, from Chinua Achebe’s novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ to William Butler Yeats’ poem ‘The Second Coming’. Thus, it is forming connections and divergences between literature, digital media and dance dramaturgy.
The performance is presented in three parallel scenes running side by side as projection mapping, text installations and body movement diffused across the space. The audience is invited to move around freely, to engage in the feelings of an alienated body in a world that is constantly becoming more globalized, pluralistic and commodified. A body that is entangled in a utopic promise of African futures, yet confronted with present dystopias, historic realities, illusions and decolonising concepts.
Admission is free.
