ロルカは、スペイン南部のアンダルシア地方に生まれ、地元の伝統文化であるフラメンコや民衆の歌（カンテ・ホンド）の要素を、最先端の文学と融合させた情熱的で哀切に満ちた作品を数多く残しました。
彼の作品は時空を超え、文学、音楽、舞踊、映画など、あらゆる分野にインスピレーションを与え続けています。
1936年8月、スペイン内戦が勃発した直後、独裁者フランコを支持する右派ファシスト陣営によって、38歳という若さで裁判もないまま暗殺されました。彼の自由な思想や芸術活動、そして同性愛者であったことが激しく敵視されたためです。
その遺体はいまだに発見されておらず、彼の死は「暴力によって文化と自由が圧殺された悲劇」として、世界中で語り継がれています。
