November topic:
History & Technology: Intent, Causality, Agency, and Limitations of Technology in the Historical Archive

Talk Synopsis:
Knowledge has been indispensable to the project of understanding power relations. This talk interrogates the technologies of knowledge and their impact in structuring lives as shaped through the common experience of empire and imperialism, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Inquiries into technology as a mode of knowledge production also draw upon the uses of technology in the context where it not only functions as an element of domination but is also appropriated in the everyday lives of people. Additionally, explicit engagement with technology in the form of census, surveys, transportation, medicine, and public health measures brings a population into face with massive state ventures as a mode of governance. In equal measure, technology is also invoked in the production of culture while commemorating and preserving the past through archaeological excavation, architectural preservation, and the maintenance of heritage sites. Identifying the multiple sources of knowledge as produced through technological intervention is an initial step to recognizing the sites of power and the modes of dominance and resistance. The pervasiveness of technology has become an essential element of human life, and our interaction with it has shaped our actions in significant ways. This talk will discuss the various facets of technological engagement to develop a broader definition of the historical archive that has shaped the contours of historical knowledge.
