About the event

Walk in a Wetland at Myakka Headwaters Preserve
Explore, discover, and learn about wildlife and land conservation at Myakka Headwaters Preserve.

About this Event

Join us for a naturalist-guided tour and wet walk at Big Waters Land Trust's Myakka Headwaters Preserve. Along the way, participants will learn about the plants and animals that call this place home and the importance of protecting natural areas along the Myakka River to benefit people and nature. This unique property, only open to the public during special events and guided tours, is situated at the source of the Myakka River, where seven creeks converge. The Preserve’s floodplain forests contain tupelo, pop ash, and red maple trees, and support threatened orchids and air plants. We will be walking approximately 3 miles on dirt and grass trails through pine and oak forests, crossing a floodplain marsh, and wading through a pop ash swamp. Be prepared to get your feet and lower body wet as we walk through water up to waist deep.

This program is suitable for all ages. Participants under 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.

Participants should bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing for walking outdoors that can get wet! We recommend sun protection, bug spray, and shoes that securely strap or tie to your feet, no flip-flops or slides. Water shoes, crocs, tevas or chacos-style water sandals, keens, or old sneakers are all good choices for footwear. Your feet and lower body will get wet and muddy. Please do not wear clothes or shoes that you would like to keep clean and dry. Please note there are no restrooms or water fountains available on site. The nearest restroom is located about 2 minutes down the road at Myakka Community Park.

A $5 dollar donation per person is suggested for this program. Your gift will help us save wild places and continue to engage people in nature. We greatly appreciate your support!
