Produced and directed by Herk Harvey and starring Candace Hilligoss,
, when released in 1962, went unnoticed by most movie fans.
Since the 1980's, the film has gained a following, as critics and film scholars praise its
cinematography and darkly foreboding mood.
David Lynch considers Carnival of Souls a masterpiece, and was influenced by the
film at a young age. Having a profound experience on him, some even suggest Lynch's
"Mulholland Drive" is a reimagining of Carnival of Souls. The score's haunting organ music,
composed by Gene Moore, adds to the fim's eerie atmosphere.
