The theatre has shows every day and even hosts annual Summertime workshops and plays for children. Every year on the 28th of February, the Memorial Concert is held in its premises. An annual Theatre Festival is held in November, and many other programmes which promote language, poetry, international cinema, performing arts use this venerable institution.
The National Centre For Performing Arts or NCPA was established with the aim to maintain, preserve and promote India’s performing arts such as dance, music, theatre, film and other arts such as literature and photography. Established in 1969, this multi-event space has showcased some of the most important plays in Mumbai for decades. The venue has many event spaces some of which include the Tata Theatre and the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre.
Mumbai is also home to many Marathi theatre groups which have a huge fan following with generations of ardent supporters. Such is the support these groups enjoy that even singular plays and theatre artistes observes a certain amount of celebrity status. Some plays even have had over 2000 shows! All The Best has had over 3000 shows and has been adapted into a Hindi film and been produced in eight other languages as well. It follows the story of three roommates who all fall in love with the same girl. Varhad Nighalay Londonla holds the world record for the maximum number of characters played by one actor. Laxman Deshpande plays 52 characters in this play about a village family coming to terms with their daughter-in-law who is from London. Natasamrat is an adapted Shakespeare play, written by the beloved VV Shivradkar and has had over 300 shows.
