Kathak: By Shama Bhate’s Nadroop

Ratikant Mohapatra, one of India’s foremost Odissi dance exponents and choreographers, is celebrated for his innovative works that honour tradition while embracing contemporary aesthetics. Over four decades, he has significantly advanced the global profile of Odissi through performances, pedagogy and institution-building. As Director of Srjan and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Communication and Indic Studies at Sri Sri University, Cuttack, he has mentored generations of artistes, fostering excellence and creative vision. A recipient of honours including the Central and Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, he holds a Guinness World Record for choreographing 555 dancers in a single Odissi composition, embodying an enduring commitment to the art’s preservation, evolution and universal appeal.

A performer, teacher, choreographer, artistic director and thinker, Shama Bhate’s work spans 50 years. She is the principal disciple of Rohini Bhate, the doyenne of Kathak, and of musician Suresh Talwalkar. She is a winner of numerous awards, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Maharashtra Rajya Puraskar and Kundanlal Gangani Award. She is the Director of Nadroop, a Pune-based Kathak institute. Bhate teaches at many state universities and is a member of advisory boards of numerous arts academies of national repute.
