Rhythm, grace, and devotion come alive in Kathak exponent Vidha Lal’s presentation—a tribute to the maestros of the Jaipur Gharana and the enduring spirit of Rajasthan.

n this Kathak presentation by choreographer Vidha Lal, the traditional greeting Khamma Ghani becomes the doorway to an evening that celebrates the grandeur of the Jaipur Gharana. The performance unfolds as a tapestry of rhythm, expression, and devotion, honouring the gharana’s rich vocabulary while embracing moments of innovation.

The journey begins with Padharo Maare Des, a soulful welcome that blends the warmth of Rajasthani culture with Kathak’s intricate techniques. This is followed by an invocation to Devi Durga, and a heartfelt tribute to the legendary gurus Pt. Devi Lal Ji and Pt. Durga Lal Ji. Carrying forward their legacy, Vidha presents a solo marked by powerful footwork, complex layakari, and dynamic compositions including tode, tukde, paran, and chakradar.

The ensemble then takes the stage with Ardhanarishwar, a striking portrayal of the balance between Shiva and Shakti, performed through expressive nritta and abhinaya set to a rare 21-beat cycle. Playful abhinaya comes to life in ‘Dekho Sakhi Kanhiya Roke Tharo Hai Gail’, offering a glimpse into the gopis’ tender exchanges with Krishna. Devotion deepens with Meera’s bhajan ‘Suno Re Dayal’, leading to the evening’s crescendo—a spirited tarana where rhythm and grace unite in joyous celebration.

More than a salutation, ‘Khamma Ghani’ becomes an artistic offering—an ode to Rajasthan’s spirit, a tribute to its maestros, and a journey through the timeless heritage of Jaipur Gharana Kathak.
