In this exciting collaboration with Sarmaya Archives, Mumbai, Art Walks Mumbai (AWM) delves into their exhibition, “Portrait of a Nation, A Nation in Portraits: 19th Century Photography of the Indian Subcontinent from the Sarmaya Collection,” to interpret and discuss the archival images on display. Ranging from Himalayan landscapes to ‘ethnographic’ images of the masses, and royal portraits to images of monuments; this vast exhibition seeks to understand the motive and purpose these images served and how they helped create and propagate a new national identity.
