Exhibition | Navratna: India's National Treasure Artists
Navratna | India’s National Treasure Artists
From the collection of DAG
7th October – 11th November 2018
Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum, in collaboration with DAG, presents, ‘Navratna: India’s National Treasure Artists’. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum from 7 October to 11 November 2018.
During the 1970s, the Indian government had passed an act declaring the works of nine artists—Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil, Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy, Nicholas Roerich, Sailoz Mukherjee—to be national art treasures. Titled 'Navratna: India’s National Treasure Artists', the exhibition will highlight each artist’s distinct practice, style and their varied choice of media, while exploring the common thread in their works.
Of the nine, interestingly, six of them had their roots in Bengal (Kolkata). They are among the finest practitioners of modernism from the early 20th century (though Ravi Varma practiced mostly in the 19th century). Each of them brings a unique perspective to the platform of Indian art.
