A Musical Melange
Featuring Trilok Gurtu (percussions) and Sid Sriram (vocal) with Anantha R. Krishnan (mridangam), Evan Slack (guitar) and Rahul Wadhwani (keyboards).
History reveals that India, with its rich tapestry of musical traditions spanning art (classical), folk and popular genres, has served as a fertile ground for experimentation and fusion. Today, contemporary fusion music in India stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation, embodying a dynamic synthesis of diverse musical genres and cultural influences. Contemporary Indian musicians, both within the country and across the diaspora, are embracing the fusion ethos to craft innovative soundscapes that resonate both locally and internationally.
Trilok Gurtu is a world-renowned percussionist and composer whose innovative works show influences of Indian music, jazz and world music. Son of Shobha Gurtu, an eminent Indian vocalist, he was initially trained in tabla, and later took to the Western drum kit. Over the years, having performed with iconic musicians across the world, he has incorporated several non-conventional elements into his sound. With a huge discography to his credit, he has been decorated with a number of prestigious international honours.
Born in India and raised in the US, Sid Sriram is a trained Carnatic (South Indian art music) musician, composer, music producer, playback singer and R&B songwriter who has been working in international and Indian music industries across various Indian languages. A recipient of several prominent honours, he has worked with some top-ranking film directors and composed independent albums including Sidharth, an all-English album, which mixes Carnatic music with R&B and Indie-rock influences.
Joining Gurtu and Sriram in the intercultural dialogue are Anantha R. Krishnan, Evan Slack and Rahul Wadhwani.
The grandson and disciple of mridangam maestro Palghat Raghu, Anantha R. Krishnan trained initially under his uncle, R. Ramkumar. A professor of music, Krishnan holds a Master’s degree in electronic music, and was a distinguished student of the tabla under maestro Zakir Hussain.
Rahul Wadhwani is recognised as a well-known jazz pianist and composer in the field of Western contemporary and fusion music. He is also known to participate in pop and Bollywood music events with several eminent artistes.
Evan Slack is a US-based guitarist known for his ability to lead as well as play a supportive role within a group. He is recognised for collaborative endeavours with artistes from various music cultures.
This musical exploration will blend traditional Indian and cross-cultural elements: instruments, musical forms, techniques and global genres like jazz, rock and R&B to create innovative soundscapes.
