Hawking's Black Hole Information Paradox
Shiraz Minwalla
TIFR

Within classical physics, nothing ever comes out of a black hole. In 1975 Stephen Hawking demonstrated that this is no longer true in the quantum theory: black holes radiate, lose mass and eventually disappear. Hawking's computations predict that all black holes of the same mass evaporate into identical clouds of radiation provided they have the same mass. This surprising conclusion violates a basic rule of quantum mechanics, which asserts that information is never lost in time evolution. So must we conclude Einstein's gravity and quantum mechanics are incompatible - and cannot both be right? The jury is still out on this question. Come and form your own opinion!

About the speaker: Prof. Shiraz Minwalla works in the area of string theory at TIFR and has won many awards for his research including the Bhatnagar award, Infosys Prize, and the New Horizons in Physics prize.
