Cenagen has announced plans to create approximately 300 jobs in our area, which could bring 300 new residents and their families—potentially doubling Kandos’s current population of around 1,300. This scale of growth raises urgent questions about infrastructure and essential services. How will Cenagen ensure that housing, medical care, Rylstone Hospital, emergency services (police, fire brigade, ambulance), school capacity, supermarket supply, and internet access are adequately prepared to support this rapid expansion and safeguard the wellbeing of both new arrivals and the existing community?

Kandos is cherished for its peace and quiet—a defining quality of life for residents and visitors. With Cenagen’s proposed project expected to increase rail traffic, heavy vehicles, and industrial activity, alongside a significant rise in population, there is concern about the impact on the town’s sound environment. What steps will Cenagen take to assess, manage, and mitigate noise levels to ensure that Kandos’s sound character is protected and that residents are not subjected to disruptive or harmful noise pollution?

There are serious concerns about toxicity and the potential environmental and health impacts should methane and other noxious gases leak into the surrounding area. Residents will rightly have many questions about how such risks will be managed. What specific measures will Cenagen implement to ensure the absolute safety of Kandos and its people—including leak prevention, monitoring systems, emergency response protocols, and transparent communication with the community?

Is Cenagen aware that a coal seam fire is burning beneath the hill behind the proposed project site? This presents a serious and ongoing risk, particularly in the event of nearby bushfires. What steps will Cenagen take to assess and monitor this underground fire, and how will it plan for and mitigate potential impacts—both environmental and safety-related—should bushfire conditions threaten the area surrounding the development?
