MALTI: Somateknika II: Eċċess
F’dan is-seminar, Omar N’Shea u Niki Young se jkunu qed jargumentaw li l-eċċessi tal-ġisem mhumiex patoloġiji, kif jesprimihom il-qafas tar-regolazzjoni soċjo-ekonomika u medika, iżda huma espressjoni fundamentali tal-ħajja li kontinwament jirreżistu il-ħtif mid-diskors kontemporanju tal-produttività u l-futurità riproduttiva. Omar jibda billi jħares lejn il-ġisem queer f’Malta fis-sebgħinijiet u t-tmeninijiet lil hinn mill-oġġett anatomiku u juża lenti awtoteoretika biex jibda jressaqu lejn ġisem li jista jitqies bħala arkivju storiku-politiku ħaj mimli affetti somatiċi tal-ikkampjar, l-erotiżmu, u l-esperimentazzjoni ormonali. Dawn l-affetti, jgħid Omar, nistgħu naqrawhom bħala forom ta’ infiq sovran, eċċessi li joħorġu mill-ġisem waqt li nkunu qed noħolqu temporalitajiet ġodda ta’ preżent kontinwu li jirrifjutaw l-akkumulazzjoni kapitali u l-futurità. Niki se jkun qed jibni fuq ix-xoghol ta’Alphonso Lingis billi mill-premessa li x-xewqa mhijiex kollox u li l-ħajja hija kkostitwita mill-eċċess. Il-problema politika, skontu, hija l-kwistjoni ta’ x’għandu jsir minn dan l-eċċess li s-soċjetà tipprova torganizza u trażżan permezz ta’ patologiji varji. Niki jargumenta li l-passjoni, ċjoè dik il-forza attiva u eċċessiva ġġenerata mill-ġisem, tfixkel dan l-ordni soċjo-politiku, u toħloq preżent intensifikat li jikxef vitalità aktar profonda tal-ħajja li la tista titnaqqas f’sempliċi utilità u lanqas f’koordinazzjoni soċjali.

ENGLISH: Somatechnics II: Excess
In this seminar, Omar N’Shea and Niki Young will be arguing that bodily excesses are not pathologies, as usually framed within socio-economic and medical regulatory frameworks, but are instead fundamental expressions of life that continuously resist capture by contemporary discourses of productivity and reproductive futurity. Omar begins by looking through an auto-theoretical lens at the queer body in Malta in the 1970s and 1980s, treating the body not as an anatomical object but rather as something that may resemble a living historical-political archive filled with somatic affects of camp, eroticism, and hormonal experimentation. According to Omar, we can read these affects as forms of sovereign expenditure, excesses emanating from bodies as they create new temporalities within a continuous present while refusing accumulation and futurity. Niki will then build on the work of Alphonso Lingis, starting from the premise that life is constituted by a positive excess rather than the negativity of desire. The political problem, in his view, becomes what to do with the excess that society tries to organise and contain through various pathologies. Niki argues that passion, that is, the active and excessive force generated by the body, tends to disrupt the socio-political order and produces an intensified present that reveals a deeper vitality of life, one that cannot be reduced either to mere utility or social coordination.

Omar N’Shea huwa storiku kulturali li fir-riċerka tiegħu jiffoka fuq l-istorja tal-ġeneru u tat-teknoloġiji tal-ġisem fil-Mediterran u fil-Lvant Nofsani.
