The M.A. in Film Studies within the Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with Wicked Comics – the NGO behind the ever-successful Malta Comic Con – have joined forces to host a memorable double-bill talk on Tuesday, 𝟭𝟭 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 at 𝟭𝟴:𝟬𝟬, in 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟮𝟬, 𝗗𝘂𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗫𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 (𝗟𝗖), Msida Campus.
The event will feature 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻, delivering a talk entitled “Bringing Anime to the West: The Business Behind the 1990s Boom”, and 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴, whose presentation “Adventures in Storytelling: From Comics to the Big Screen” will take the audience on a journey through his multifaceted career.
The evening will conclude with Frain and King discussing together the making of U2’s animated music video of “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, K*ll Me”, part of the soundtrack for Joel Schumacher’s 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 (1995), a video that won two MTV European Music Awards and was named by 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 as one of the greatest animated music videos of all time.
𝙰𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚏𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝚘𝚏 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚘𝚙𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚐𝚎𝚗𝚎𝚛𝚊𝚕 𝚙𝚞𝚋𝚕𝚒𝚌.
Andy Frain is the founder of the anime distribution company Manga Entertainment and the executive producer of the 1995 anime feature 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭, which director James Cameron hailed as “the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence”. After leaving Manga Entertainment, Frain founded the animation production company Touchwood Animation, as well as CGI studios in London and Bucharest. Together, Frain and his teams have worked on numerous films, television series, commercials, and music videos.
Dave King is an award-winning director, scriptwriter, and storyboard artist with decades of experience spanning comics, animation, and film. His career includes work with Marvel Comics UK, DC Comics, and Warner Bros., contributing to iconic characters such as Dennis the Menace, Looney Tunes, and The Powerpuff Girls. King has created content for the BBC, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and MTV, and continues to develop projects for film, television, and multimedia.
