Taking perilous journeys in small, overcrowded boats, many died from predatory pirates, starvation, and storms. In many cases, a U.S. Navy P-3 Orion aircraft on anti-submarine patrol would sight a small boat filled with refugees.Boat People Rescue: Tom Spink, CAPT USN, Ret.In 1980, a P-3 Orion of VP-40, Crew One, sighted a small boat and directed USS Joseph Strauss (DDG-16) to its location. The Strauss rescued the survivors, one of whom was Ngoc Giang, a 17-year-old girl. This girl, now Shelley McElheny, after years of searching, was able to connect with the VP-40 crew in 2002 and gave them a heartfelt thank you for saving their lives.
