- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 21 Feb, 2026 at 12:00 pm – Sat, 21 Feb, 2026 at 02:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for a talk on The Vietnamese Boat People with Tom Spink, CAPT USN (Ret.) and Dr. Hien Do of San José State University.About this EventThe Vietnamese Boat People were nearly two million refugees who fled Vietnam by sea between 1975 and early 1990 to escape the communist regime’s oppression and deprivation after the Vietnam War. Taking perilous journeys in small, overcrowded boats, many died from predatory pirates, starvation, and storms. In many cases, a U.S. Navy P-3 Orion aircraft on anti-submarine patrol would sight a small boat filled with refugees.Boat People Rescue: Tom Spink, CAPT USN, Ret.In 1980, a P-3 Orion of VP-40, Crew One, sighted a small boat and directed USS Joseph Strauss (DDG-16) to its location. The Strauss rescued the survivors, one of whom was Ngoc Giang, a 17-year-old girl. This girl, now Shelley McElheny, after years of searching, was able to connect with the VP-40 crew in 2002 and gave them a heartfelt thank you for saving their lives. This episode is described in the book Pacific Patrol by Tom Spink (CAPT, USN, ret.), who will give his account of how this reunion was brought about and introduce Shelley. The Community: Dr. Hien Do, San Jose State UniversityAbout 2.3 million people in the U.S. identify as Vietnamese according to the 2020 U.S. Census. They are the fourth largest Asian-origin population in the United States, representing about 9% of the country’s Asian population. How did they attain such a status almost five decades after the end of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War? Hear Dr. Hien Do discuss the rise of Vietnamese American communities in the U.S., covering the historical, social, and political events before the arrival of the Vietnamese. He will describe the federal government policies that led to the development of this community. In particular, the presentation will examine the “Boat People” and their perilous journey to escape Vietnam—a major exodus by nearly two million citizens.Vietnamese Faces — 1963–64: Dan Sullivan, CPO USN, Ret.A personal collection of photos will be on display depicting Vietnamese men, women, and children of Biên Hòa. The photographer, Dan Sullivan (CPO, USN, ret.), captured these faces during his tour of duty in Vietnam from 1963–64. Dan will present the backstory to these compelling photos.Moffett Field Museum - Bay 112pm - 2pmTickets Available Online & At The DoorGeneral Ticket - $25 for Adults, Seniors, & ChildrenMember Ticket - $10Includes Museum General AdmissionDoes not include WW1 Exhibit
