Field trip to the Spring River Earthwork in Lawrence County
Saturday, November 8th

Please join us for a site visit and tour of the Spring River Earthwork, a rare well-preserved example of a late-precontact Neosho phase site, located less than an hour from Springfield, Missouri. Only a few of these enclosed earthwork sites remain in and around the Ozarks and few are as intact. The preservation is largely due to the establishment of an historic cemetery within the enclosure dating back to the 1830s which can also be explored.

We will meet at the TA Travel Center between 12:30-1 pm
in Mt. Vernon (1501 E Mt Vernon Blvd, Mt Vernon, MO 65712). 

At 1 o’clock we’ll carpool to the site (about 10 minutes away)
and return around 3 pm. 

Much of the site is mowed for the cemetery, but some of the earthwork extends into the wooded area and although it should be cooler, bug spray will be available for those who want to explore.
