They were carried, held to the nose, suspended on chains or girdles, or hung in rooms to scent the air. It was believed that these sweet-smelling herbs and spices could ward off miasma (bad smells that cause infectious diseases) and protect the wearer from illness (eg the plague). Make your own pomander from a handful of simple ingredients. Fresh limes, cloves and ground cinnamon is all you need for this classic holiday craft.
