Synopsis

Tourism has been considered an economic pillar for these islands at least from Malta's Independence as its build-up through the years has shown. It has certainly been a social activity whereby visitors have used their time on the islands to study the traditions, culture and characteristics of the local community.

This presentation is based on the speaker's publication on the history of tourism in Malta and Gozo (Zarb, 2004). It is hoped that this talk will help the audience to understand that tourism is a socio-cultural experience that needs to move from a purely economic industry based on numbers to a human experience based on quality.



The Speaker

Dr Julian Zarb has forty years’ experience within the tourism industry, working in hotels and restaurants in the UK and Malta. In 2003 he moved into the public service in Malta where he was appointed Director Tourism within the same Ministry for Tourism and Culture between 2010 and 2013. Today he is a board director of the Tourism Society (UK) and a Postgraduate fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He is also an expert on the High Street Task Force in the UK, Chair of the Institute of Hospitality Mediterranean Branch as well as a Researcher, Local Tourism Planning Consultant and Academic. Julian Zarb is a freelance tourism journalist and media presenter and was awarded the honour of Tourism Journalist of the Year by the Ministry for Tourism in 2000 and 2003. He has for many years lectured at the Institute for Travel, Tourism and Culture at the University of Malta. He focuses his work on local tourism planning and community-based tourism implementation. Julian Zarb has presented various papers at conferences in London, Madrid, Malta and Italy and has also acted as consultant and coordinator for several projects including the ESCO project, where he chaired the Hospitality and Tourism Reference Group. Julian Zarb is the founder-president of the Malta Tourism Society.
