Join us for a fascinating lecture by art historian Frederica Agius, exploring the ambitious transformation of Palazzo Parisio under Marquis Giuseppe Scicluna. Determined to remodel the historic palace according to the latest Italian artistic and architectural fashions of the late 19th century, Scicluna commissioned renowned Italian architect Carlo Sada and brought together Italian craftsmen, decorators, and skilled workers. Materials and decorative elements were also imported directly from Italy to realise his vision.

The lecture will trace the chronology of this remarkable project and examine the movement of artistic expertise, labour, and materials across national boundaries. Palazzo Parisio stands as an outstanding example of private patronage in Malta and remains unparalleled in the richness and quality of its artistic decoration. It social dimension reflects the cultural ambitions of the 19c century while anticipating many of the concerns that would shape the 20th.

Following the lecture, guests will be invited to enjoy a glass of Prosecco on the terrace and the historic rooms of the palace at their leisure.
