The city of Caltagirone. located on the southern part of the province of Catania, has three claims to fame:
Firstly, it is a UNESCO World heritage town, being one of the eight towns in South East Sicily which together form part of the Val di Noto UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Secondly, Caltagirone is also considered as the Sicilian capital for artisanal ceramics, with beautiful artistic ceramic works produced in the workshops of the various well-known Caltagirone artisans, artists and ceramists. There are three main types of ceramics produced in Caltagirone, namely:
- glazed ceramics, or Majolica, where the three predominant colours are blue, yellow and green
- matt ceramics, which are mainly used for figurines such as crib protagonists or figures depicting trades and professions
- figurine ceramics, where the ceramics may also be embellished by the use of textiles or the use of mechanical movement.
Thirdly, the town is also considered as the Christmas Crib capital of Sicily, with various cribs remaining on display throughout the year and many more created specifically for the Christmas period. Caltagirone's cribs vary in terms of size, layout, originality and materials used, ranging from grandiose ornate baroque cribs to minute cribs located inside a can of Coca Cola.
During the time of our visit to Caltagirone in mid-December, the town is a buzzing hive of activity, much to the delight of crib enthusiasts from all over the world who make it a point to visit Caltagirone at this time of the year.
During our day trip, we will be visiting and exploring the town of Caltagirone. Caltagirone has a lot to offer the visitor, including the Scala Santa Maria with its 142 steps decorated with Caltagirone majolica tiles, the 17th century Bourbonic prisons (entrance included) which today house an interesting museum with various exhibits and artefacts ranging from pre-historic times to today , the Duomo of San Giuliano, the unique St Francis bridge which is decorated with beautiful old Majolica ceramics, the Botanic gardens, the Musuem of Ceramics, the many ceramists’ workshops and much more.
Our visit will coincide with the appropriate time of the year when the town is eagerly preparing for the forthcoming Christmas festivities. Our visit to Caltagirone is therefore very pleasant for those who look forward to spend time and explore at a leisurely pace this typical Sicilian town with its unique buzzing pre-Christmas atmosphere.
Around midday, we will head to the countryside outside Caltagirone for a veritable feast of traditional Sicilian home-made cooking at a local agriturismo / restaurant, which has become my favourite when I am in this area. Lunch will consist of a sumptuous six course meal, including antipasti, pasta, meat-based main course with contorno of vegetables, dessert, coffee and liquer. Free-flowing local wine and mineral water will be served during lunch.
After lunch, we will head southwards towards the town of Ragusa, where we will visit the Centro Commerciale Ibleo (www.centroibleo.it ) for some Christmas shopping, before heading to Pozzallo for our return trip to Malta.
