Could your horse be suffering from gastric ulcers?

Gastric ulcers are surprisingly common in horses, particularly those in training, competition or experiencing changes in their routine. While some horses show obvious signs of discomfort, others may display only subtle changes in behaviour or performance.

Signs to look out for include:
? Changes in behaviour or temperament
? Reduced performance or reluctance to work
? Girth sensitivity or discomfort when saddling
? Poor appetite or unexplained weight loss
? Recurrent or mild colic episodes
? Changes in condition or general wellbeing

Why consider gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is the most reliable way to diagnose gastric ulcers, allowing our veterinary team to examine the stomach lining directly using a specialised video endoscope.

This procedure enables us to identify and assess gastric ulcers, investigate other abnormalities and develop a targeted treatment and management plan based on your horse’s individual needs.

Expert advice, individualised care.

Dr Cam Hinkley from Essential Equine Veterinary will be available to discuss your horse’s findings, answer questions and provide tailored recommendations for treatment, feeding and ongoing management.

Whether your horse is showing signs of discomfort or you’re simply wanting to investigate unexplained changes in performance, gastroscopy can provide valuable insight into their gastric health.
