- **Event Description**: The slaying of elderly hedgetrimmer Charles Walton on Valentine's Day, 1945, is Warwickshire Constabulary's oldest unsolved murder.

His body was found in a field on the slopes of Meon Hill - he had been struck over the head with his own walking stick, then pinned to the ground with a pitchfork thrust on either side of his neck. His trouncing hook, used that day to trim the hedgerow, was found sticking into a huge gaping wound in his neck.

With the Warwickshire Police struggling for clues, detectives from Scotland Yard were dispatched. Despite interviewing tight-lipped locals, a myserious red bearded man roaming the countryside, and over a thousand Italian prisoners of war held at the nearby Long Marston camp, the London detectives returned no closer to a conviction.

Soon, whispers of witchcraft began to be spread.

The sign of a cross had been carved on the victim's chest, it was said. Stories were told of a black dog which, should you see it, meant you or a family member were going to die. It was claimed that Charles Walton himself was a witch, who had cursed the land by training a pet toad to crawl along the earth with a toy plough tied to its back.
